情態(tài)動詞具有一定的詞匯含義，情態(tài)動詞后接不帶“to”的不定式共同構(gòu)成復(fù)合謂語。情態(tài)動詞可以直接構(gòu)成否定句和疑問句。助動詞除了構(gòu)成否定句和疑問句外，謂語動詞的時態(tài)除了一般現(xiàn)時和一般過去是通過謂語動詞的形態(tài)變化來構(gòu)成外，其它時態(tài)都需要通過助動詞來構(gòu)成。

介詞是一種虛詞，不能單獨(dú)使用，必須帶上賓語構(gòu)成介詞短語，或依附在不及物動詞后面使用。介詞短語可以在句子中充當(dāng)狀語，定語，表語和賓語補(bǔ)語，英語介詞發(fā)達(dá)，有的介詞還兼有連詞或副詞詞性。冠詞也是虛詞，不能單獨(dú)使用，必須跟名詞一起使用，對名詞起限定作用。冠詞也可以用在形容詞或分詞前，表示具有形容詞性質(zhì)一類的人或事物，相當(dāng)于名詞。例如：the rich富人, the poor窮人, the young年青人, the old 老年人, the following下面的, the wounded傷員。
