編者按/精讀指導(B): Lesson 5選自英文版 第85-87頁[第5章 An Excess of Phlegm],本課內容有3頁(實際上是2頁+1/3頁文字),主要是描寫普通巫師等級考試(O.W.L.s: Ordinary Wizarding Levels’ examination)的考試結果。在第5冊《鳳凰社》的精讀中,我們學習過O.W.L.s內容,在本課學習中,我們會看到哈利、羅恩(Ron)、赫敏(Hermione)三人的考試結果。從文章寫作的角度看,先寫大家迫切地等待貓頭鷹送考試結果,接著把哈利一個人考試結果展示出來,Ron 和Hermione考試結果是通過討論來展示的,重點寫了哈利對考試結果的心理描寫,然后通過Ron興奮的話語和哈利的心理描述,把Ron 和Hermione考試結果寫出來。最后兩段描寫哈利心中的微微失望,因為魔藥學考試結果E沒有達到Snape 教授的要求,可能會影響哈利將來做傲羅(Auror)的職業目標。
在詞匯學習方面,注意掌握:halfway, run, sinking的使用.
halfway ‘在···的中間;在中途;到一半’,作為副詞使用,經常與through連用:He had had no chance of passing History of Magic, given that he had collapsed halfway through the examination (2014f, 86).
run ‘移動[某物]’,在本課我們學習動詞的一個新義項,它在課文中表示手指在成績單上移動:He ran his finger down the grades.... he had passed well in Transfiguration and Herbology, he had even Exceeded Expectations at Potions!
Sinking在本課中是把a/that sinking feeling ‘不詳的感覺;沮喪之情’這個固定用法變形使用:He had known all along that he wouldn’t, but he still felt a sinking in his stomach as he looked again at that small black ‘E’ (2014f, 86-87).

關于英語學習方法,請大家參考我在2022年2月28日所寫的“英語學習方法論(一)”。這篇文章是基于我們近期《哈利波特與鳳凰社》泛讀和精讀43課,以及《中國日報》泛讀和153篇精讀文章所寫。
就我們初級英語課程而言,我們目前有兩個工作目標:一是編寫《哈利波特英語詞典》,單詞收錄量為2到3萬;二是編寫《博雅英語閱讀文庫·中國日報1000篇》。我們有三級英語課程,初級英語課程為《哈利波特》7冊的內容和中國日報(China Daily) 、《喬布斯傳》、《馬斯克傳》等英語原著,以訓練學生流暢地閱讀英語小說、英語報刊雜志和按照英語習慣順暢地寫作為目標;中級英語課程為英語學術訓練,能流暢地閱讀英語學術著作,如 ,并能夠書寫規范的學術論文;高級英語課程是以了解通過英語來學習文化,學習莎士比亞等英美名家著作、英文版的《圣經》、《易經》等等,目的是更加深入地了解英語背后的文明和中華文明等,讓英語學習不僅僅止于語言,要上升到文明的角度來學習英語和用英語來學習。我們認可這樣的理念“語言和宗教是定義一個文明的核心標志”。我們的課程有三個立足點,一、高中畢業的英語水平;二、有學習的主動性;三、雅思最低成績6.5。
